At Papagayo Park, the Art Studio is one of the community’s newest spaces for focused, hands-on creativity. Set within the park’s entrance, the studio is an inspiring creative atelier, a place where participants can dive in, experiment, and pour their energy into creating something with their hands.

The programming was designed as a creative playground, a place for thoughtful work rather than a quick activity stop. Clayworks, Sip & Paint, Creative Workshops, Open Hub hours, and rotating Guest Artist Master Classes anchor the monthly calendar, offering a mix of structured classes and flexible studio time.

In the Clayworks series, guests shape hand-built ceramics inspired by daily rituals and Costa Rica’s coastal landscapes. Mugs, bowls, and simple vessels become tangible reminders of time spent on the peninsula. Other classes look to the country’s deeper roots, drawing on the clay traditions of the Chorotega people and the pottery heritage of Guaitil, inviting participants to reinterpret ancestral motifs in a contemporary way.

For those more comfortable with brushes than clay, the Sip & Paint series offers relaxed, social sessions that are as much about unwinding as they are about technique. Watercolors and acrylics become tools for in-studio still life creations. On Open Air Studio days, easels move outside, and guests paint directly from life.

The Creative Workshop series turns the space into a laboratory for play. Printmaking Lab explores simple shapes and textures on paper and fabric. Mixed Media Jam encourages layering ink, paint and collage. Illustration Playground invites guests to draw without worrying about perfection, using gesture and storytelling to find a more intuitive visual language. Each session focuses less on the finished product and more on curiosity and experimentation.

Once a month, a Guest Artist Master Class shifts the energy again. Local and visiting artists bring their own craft into the studio – from macramé and natural dyes to contemporary jewelry, traditional masquerade, and wildlife watercolors – and share both techniques and the stories behind them. These sessions connect the peninsula community with the wider creative landscape of Costa Rica, turning the Art Studio into a small but meaningful cultural bridge.

Open studio hours are the studio’s most informal invitation. During this time, members and guests can drop in, claim a seat, and work on self-directed projects or explore DIY kits at their own pace. Access is complimentary, with fees only for materials, making it easy to turn a free hour between activities into a creative interlude.
