Strategic Stewardship

Sustainable Development

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility make everything on the peninsula possible.
With 1,400 acres spanning 11 miles of coastline, the peninsula will remain a living, breathing work in progress for years to come. The heart of ownership’s vision is a long-term commitment of strategic stewardship that will help preserve Peninsula Papagayo’s legacy for future generations, by supporting activities and outreach that strengthen the surrounding communities while protecting this important biological corridor in perpetuity. And by increasing Peninsula Papagayo’s capacity and credibility as a conservation-focused organization.

A profound regard for living things is a signature of Peninsula Papagayo, paying homage to Costa Rica’s status as a world leader in environmentalism. Through a unique public/private covenant with the Costa Rican government, the peninsula’s 1,400 acres will forever be protected. An incredible 70% of the land will be conserved as open green space. Nature will remain the peninsula’s most precious gift.

By preserving wildlife corridors and water holes, restoring animal dormitories and creating an on-site botanical nursery. By continuing to set visionary standards for sustainable design principles and sensitive growth—an example for others to follow. By remembering the animals were here first. And respecting that with each carefully laid step.

Corporate social responsibility has been integral to the management of Peninsula Papagayo since day 1. It remains so today. Working together, management and employees continue to cultivate a community that embraces local culture and sustainability best practices, preserving a living sanctuary for man and nature.

Their credo: create value for members and guests by providing memorable experiences and treading lightly on the earth.

From its inception, Peninsula Papagayo was envisioned to play a leading role in empowering nearby communities to achieve a sustainable future for themselves and their children. This commitment began in 2001 with the creation of a pioneering community outreach program called Creciendo Juntos—Growing Together. To date, there have been over 600,000 participants in Creciendo Juntos-sponsored courses and workshops, broadening the horizon of job opportunities, self-employment and entrepreneurship for residents in the region.
