Good friends invited the Adolfs to Costa Rica to escape winter in New York. Avid world travellers and adventurers, the family instantly fell in love with the natural beauty, biodiversity and the happiest people on earth.
What is your idea of the perfect trip?
Any adventure with our children and good friends.
What is your favorite spot on the peninsula?
Where we take our kayaks into the bay in front of our house, paddling to our secret beach—sorry, the rest is classified.
You recently finished building a fabulous new home on the peninsula. How are you enjoying it?
Every day is as exciting as the first. Our children love and adore the diverse wildlife.
The modern architecture by SARCO Architects is intriguing. What was your inspiration?
Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe. We wanted to be able to touch the jungle on one side and the ocean on the other. We wanted to live in nature but be in our home, enjoy the views, the colors and the sounds. We love the outdoors—hence the idea of being outside when you are inside.
What is the most interesting aspect of your home?
Maybe the glass on all sides and combination of ocean and wilderness—every view is so different—or the family of monkeys in the trees. We named it “Magayon” for beauty in Bicolano. It is our oasis.
