After testing high-end European models, which proved promising but struggled with hill climbs, an unlikely breakthrough came from a French representative who suggested a specialist manufacturer in China. Their unique approach was combining best-in-class components from multiple global technology leaders to build a bike custom-engineered for each client.
Costa Rican regulations allow 500 watt motors which paved the way for a powerful, custom-designed model that is both lightweight and durable, equipped with advanced gears and disk brakes engineered to climb steep terrain with ease while maintaining exceptional control, safety, and efficiency. The bikes reach a top speed of 25 km/h, with a single charge delivering up to 40 km of range in full electric assist mode. Community members who tested the prototypes described the improved performance as transformative.
The new fleet will expand from 60 to 100 bikes, with stations strategically located throughout the peninsula, including the new Papagayo Park. An app will soon feature an interactive map, which includes navigation technology to guide riders around the peninsula with ease.
This $400,000 investment was funded entirely by the developer. Ongoing operational costs will be covered by the new resort fee paid by resort guests, ensuring long-term financial sustainability without impacting homeowners.
The new eBike program is more than just a mode of transportation, it is a symbol of Peninsula Papagayo’s commitment to pioneering sustainable mobility while strengthening our sense of connection to nature, wellness, and each other.
The future of movement is arriving this November, powerful, intuitive, and uniquely Papagayo.
