This month marks a moment of transition at Peninsula Papagayo as we bid farewell to General Manager Ian Ciappara and extend a heartfelt welcome to Brent Martin, who officially stepped into the role on April 23.

When Ian arrived in February 2021, the world—and the resort—was in a markedly different place. The pandemic still loomed, international travel had yet to rebound, and the hospitality industry was cautiously finding its footing. But for Ian, this quiet moment offered clarity—a chance to observe, to listen, and to envision a path forward.

Guided by a clear mission to elevate barefoot luxury and infuse the resort with a more pronounced sense of place, Ian assembled a dynamic team to bring that vision to life. He leaned into his Mediterranean roots to reimagine the resort’s culinary program—starting with Pesce. He transformed the restaurant into a vibrant Southern Italian concept that reflected the flavors of the region and the warmth of the Costa Rican coastline. Since reopening in November 2021, Pesce has become a guest favorite and a catalyst for the F&B evolution to follow.

In close partnership with ownership, that transformation culminated in 2023 with the debut of Virador Beach Club— a bold new expression of lifestyle within the Four Seasons brand. With its adult-only pool, stylish cabanas, and elevated beachfront dining, the beach club redefined the rhythm of resort life and brought Ian’s vision full circle.

Beyond F&B, Ian also deepened the wellness offering—opening the iconic open-air Wellness Shala and welcoming visiting wellness practitioners to add yet another dimension to the guest experience.

“I have loved every moment of living and working in this extraordinary community,” said Ian. “Together, we’ve helped shape Peninsula Papagayo into a world-class destination. It’s been an incredible journey—but after 11 years in Latin America, I’m looking forward to being closer to home and embracing new adventures in Greece.”

Ian now prepares to take on a new chapter as the future General Manager of Four Seasons Porto Heli, slated to open in 2027.

Taking the reins is Brent Martin, a seasoned hospitality leader with over 25 years of experience across hotel operations, asset management, and investment banking. A Harvard graduate with an AB in Economics and an MBA, Brent brings a rare blend of analytical rigor and deep operational insight.

His Four Seasons journey spans the globe, including GM roles in Marrakesh, Vail, Philadelphia, and Koh Samui, along with leadership positions in the company’s corporate office. Known for his ability to develop talent and foster high-performing teams, Brent is a welcome addition to Peninsula Papagayo.

We thank Ian for his visionary leadership and wish him the very best in his next chapter. ¡Brent, bienvenido a casa!
