With great offshore fishing conditions just a couple of hours from Marina Papagayo, anglers were treated to an epic day on the water at the inaugural Peninsula Papagayo Classic in July. A modified IGFA hook-and-pass team fishing competition with two entry levels, teams competed for prizes and bragging rights in both billfish and gamefish division.

Fishing is a family sport at Peninsula Papagayo and the one-day family friendly event included participants of all ages. “I was amazed when I announced the winner of the youth fishing trophy and met the 9-year-old angler who had caught three sailfish”, said Captain Bruce Blomgren, the Tournament Director. Each boat had an observer from the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), which meant that no other person could help the lad pull in his fish. “I can tell you one sailfish in an afternoon can be a lot of hard work and strain but three by this young man had me greatly admiring his ability and determination.”

Congratulations to the winners!
Billfish Division – Good Times (3 marlin and 9 sailfish)
Gamefish Division – Nimbu (2 tuna/57 pounds)
