On The Path To Net Zero

From its inception, Peninsula Papagayo was envisioned to play a vital role in creating opportunities for local families and helping nearby communities achieve socio-economic levels enjoyed in other regions of the country. It began with the creation of a pioneering community outreach program called Creciendo Juntos and continues today with innovative initiatives inspired by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This year, we are continuing to adapt and refine strategy, measuring resort-wide emissions for the first time. Working together with major stakeholders, we are in the process of identifying priority areas where emissions can be reduced and setting targets for the coming years. Our collective journey to net zero will no doubt require more change and innovation, but we are proud of the progress to date.

2020 Executive Summary

Peninsula Papagayo is blessed to be located at the doorstep of the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, a World Heritage Site. Together with our neighbors, we form part of a magical biological corridor that protects one of the last remaining dry tropical forest habitats in the Americas, home to over two-thirds of Costa Rica’s entire biodiversity. The master developer has long believed that the best way of preserving this rare gift for future generations is by integrating people and nature so members and guests can experience its wonder and be part of a new style of conservation into perpetuity. Today, Peninsula Papagayo continues to build capacity as a conservation-minded community by measuring species diversity, abundance, and production, and returning degraded habitat to a healthy, functioning condition that supports priority wildlife species.

Green Building

The master developer of Peninsula Papagayo, Ecodesarrollo Papagayo, Limitada, has adopted an integrative, environmentally-responsible approach to sustainable development, and is using all of the tools at its disposal to reduce the negative impacts from construction. Where approaches and technologies do not yet exist at a scale that can completely eliminate carbon emissions from construction projects, it is leveraging Costa Rica’s long-established offset market, as a near-term solution, to provide tangible nature-based co-benefits aligned with the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Growing Together

Over the past twenty years, Creciendo Juntos has become a pioneer in public-private partnerships in Costa Rica, collaborating with local community leaders, businesses, and national institutions to improve access to quality healthcare and education — broadening the horizon of job opportunities, self-employment, and entrepreneurship for residents in Guanacaste. Working in partnership with Amigos of Costa Rica, a qualified IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, Creciendo Juntos is eligible to receive contributions deductible as charitable gifts. This nonprofit vehicle enables members and guests to leverage our platform and technical expertise to help grow our communities.

Raising Coral

Rising ocean temperatures are expected to exceed the ability of coral reefs to survive within the next one to three decades, according to UNESCO. With restoration no longer an option, Peninsula Papagayo, working in collaboration with Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and a team of leading experts, has begun the process of restoring the coral reef ecosystems in Culebra Bay. Though growing coral is a long term proposition, there is cause for hope. In a period of 8-10 months, our partners from Raising Coral Costa Rica have been able to achieve an acceleration in growth that typically takes 12-15 years.
