- It so happened that in Munich I had a chance to shoot not competitions in a particular sport, but the starts of various types of the Olympic program - boxing, gymnastics, diving ... The behavior of athletes before the start is a whole gamut of human feelings. The finish can be different for athletes: one wins, the other loses, but at the start everyone is equal. I saw despair and the will to win on people’s faces, humility before inevitability and thirst for struggle, I heard whispers of prayers, caught the eyes of athletes, for whom the next moment could be the main thing in life .. As close as possible to the competing athlete and the spectator sitting far on the podium, it became the task of "Starts". The same goal was set in the new Olympic film.
A special place in the work of Ozerov is occupied by the films “Kochubei” and “The Big Road”, dedicated to the events of the civil war. They are the first author’s application of the director in the genre of historical chronicle, an attempt to explore his characters against the background of crucial events in the history of mankind.
- Today more than ever, I remember the unforgettable Igor Andreevich Savchenko, my first mentor at VGIK. I recall his lessons in directing, our disputes, at which he spoke so brilliantly, his good advice, spiritual nobility. Why today? Because last year I first started teaching - I took up the direction of a director’s workshop at the Film Institute. In truth, I thought for a long time before deciding to take such a step. I was afraid that I couldn’t handle it, I won’t be able to captivate the youth - for this, after all, we need a special talent. But, on the other hand, the life I lived behind has already struck sixty: I went through the war, I studied my favorite business without taking off my tunic, I saw a lot, worked a lot - why so much to one person? That's why I decided. I want to try to convey to the young people not only cinematic, but also life experience. I want to write a book about the events that I witnessed, about people whom I met especially well with. I want to make a film about the feat of the defenders of Moscow, before whose memory I bow my head. I am an optimist by nature and I believe that all this will come true ...
On the desktop of Yuri Nikolaevich Ozerov among manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs and letters from the audience there is always a small book in volume. Among the pages is a paper bookmark. The necessary words are crossed out with a pencil, for memory. “Is it possible to find a true artist, a creator who would withdraw in complacency and rest on his laurels? The tireless fanatic work, work, the belief that everything is still ahead is the path of the artist and his life. ” The author of these words and books is N. N. Ozerov Sr., the director’s father, a wonderful singer and a wonderful person, from whom his son inherited unlimited devotion to art, hard work, and respect for his difficult cinematic profession. The structure of previous films about the Olympics was built, as a rule, only on the ups and downs of wrestling, on the intense expectation of "who is who." Y. Ozerov seeks to journalistically comprehend sports material, expand the usual framework of the chronicle report on the Games.
