Unrelenting rainfall battered Costa Rica’s Pacific region, prompting a Red Alert in Guanacaste and leaving communities grappling with widespread flooding, landslides, and damaged infrastructure. The month of November saw over 1,000 millimeters (40 inches) of rainfall in some areas, overwhelming rivers and forcing around 3,000 residents into emergency shelters.

Liberia International Airport was temporarily closed on November 18th for runway repairs, disrupting flights and stranding travelers before re-opening on November 20.

At Peninsula Papagayo, damage was relatively minor despite 16 inches of rain falling in just two days. Fallen trees and debris caused temporary road closures, but efforts to clear pathways were quickly underway. The peninsula’s Emergency Command Center was operational around the clock, ensuring safety for residents, visitors, and team members.

Nearby communities faced devastating effects, with floodwaters displacing thousands, including many resort employees. 100 team members reported damage to their homes or difficulties commuting to work, and 11 team members tragically lost their homes entirely. In response, the partnership of Gencom and Mohari, as well as teams around PPGY, supported recovery efforts, providing paid leave, and supplying food baskets, cleaning supplies, and funds to contribute towards the replacement of durable goods to the most affected families.

The outpouring of support from our members and partners for recent relief efforts has been truly humbling, collectively raising over $270,000. These moments of generosity and unity reflect the heart of our community, reminding us of the meaningful role we can play in uplifting those around us.
