The story began in early 2024 when Peninsula Papagayo partnered with the Liberia Special Education Center (CEELI) to launch the Heart of the House pilot program. CEELI is the only institution of its kind in Guanacaste, and serves over 240 students with special educational needs. Recognizing the challenges individuals with disabilities face in finding dignified employment, the program offered one-month internships to four young students.

The pilot program’s results were transformative, empowering students, boosting their self-esteem, and showcasing their abilities in real-world environments. The participating students have since all been offered permanent positions within Peninsula Papagayo with a full salary. Their success highlights the power of inclusion and its positive impact on individuals and organizations.

Project coordinator Ileana Díaz played a pivotal role in the program’s success, working closely with families, teachers, and students to build trust. Families visited the resort, fostering a sense of community crucial for student adaptation. In addition to Ileana Díaz, the dedication of her team members, Carolina Fernandez, Teresita Aguilera, Alejandra Solís, Mauricio Elizondo, Danny Varela, and Clarissa Martinez also played a huge role in the program’s success.

Support from Peninsula Papagayo’s staff was also vital. Employees received training to better understand their new colleagues, helping the students integrate smoothly while enriching the team’s professional and personal lives. This mutual growth exemplified the Heart of the House mission—a workplace where diversity is celebrated and strengths are recognized.

Ericka Cambronero, Director of CEELI, expressed gratitude: “There are not enough words to express our appreciation for the peninsula welcoming our students with such care and respect. We hope this serves as a model for other special education centers, raising awareness of our students’ abilities and encouraging more companies to join this movement.”

The success of Heart of the House has set the stage for future initiatives. Peninsula Papagayo plans to expand the program, inspiring other companies to follow suit and proving that inclusivity is both a moral imperative and a driver of success.

Heart of the House is more than a program; it is a beacon of hope, proving that when organizations and communities unite for inclusivity, they pave the way for a more compassionate future in Guanacaste and beyond.
